Short Term Trip to FEBCambodia - We're off!

Come October 21st, five Kiwis from the Wairarapa will be flying to Cambodia to work with FEB's FamilyFM station in Phnom Penh. We will lay around 100 computer and telephone cables in the studio. Another major aspect of this project is building a server room to house the important technical equipment that helps keep a radio station operating smoothly.

Why are we doing this? Well it's basically about making the FEB Cambodia building 21st century capable. Once the work is completed listeners in Cambodia will be able to phone right in to the studio and discuss the important issues of life with the announcers, for all to hear. Not only will listener call-in be possible but station staff will be able to create, manage and present programs and music smoothly and easily.

Work in Progress

We are back to work tomorrow, and this is some pics of the building we are working in.

The view from our rooms

Phnom Penh is a city on the go. Not just because it never sleeps, or that people wotk seven days a week.

There is a lot of building going on, from sky scrapers to more traditional business apartments, where a family has a business on the bottom floor and families live above.

The first Monday

What a great first day!

We got to the FEB Cambodia officers at 8:30, had a good walk around. Thanks John. (John Tan from Australia) We went over the plans and got to work.

As a team it is great to start working together and for everyone to pitch in to the project. It was hot work, the new server room does have air con, but every time we turned it on we blew the power to the whole building! Oops.
We took a couple of hours off for lunch, did a bit of food shopping and got back to work for the afternoon. By then we had got a bit better climatised to the heat and by 5:00pm we had laid 34 cables (of about 100).

Packing time

Getting there is half the fun.

We are five friends from the Wairarapa, myself, Tony Arcus, my son Jonathan, Toni Higginson, Daniel Broome and Matthew Collinson.

Having been to Cambodia earlier this year and working at that time with the International family of FEB, the opportunity arose to help the radio station in Cambodia to upgrade their internal network cabling.

Being able to upgrade the cables that connect all their computers together gives FEB Cambodia the ability to better create their programs, broadcast more seamlessly and integrate new activities. One small thing the team have been wanting to do is to easily have talk-back in their programs.

During our time in Cambodia we will be updating on our goings on. So come back to this page again to see what's been happening and hopefully give you some insite in to how the Gospel is being present by the Khmer for the Khmer.

Before we go

A lot of work has gone in to getting the project off the ground. Owen Gabbie, our International Office rigging wiz has been busy making sure the plans we work from are accurate.

Staff in Cambodia have been working hard preparing the building so we can come in and get the work done quickly.

We as a team have been meeting regularly to learn about what it takes to do a short term mission, and to pray together.
